Blog G – General Fiasco Europe Tour

There’s a song by Archers of Loaf called ‘Form and File’. It starts off with a phone call and a guy leaving a message on someones machine. It could be anything he’s talking about really. But it sounds an awful lot like he’s in a band and he’s calling home for help. They’re crossing a river in northern Germany and morale is ‘pretty f**king low’. He talks about breaking up and how he’ll try and keep losses to a minimum. He asks for help and then the message trails off as the song kicks in. When things are not exactly going to plan when we’re on the road it always pops into my head. I was expecting it to be there again today as we set set off on our 10hr drive from Switzerland to Leipzig, 150k’s south of Berlin. And it was, but not in the same context. That guy is (maybe) talking about splitting up the band, things are that bad. But to be honest, aside from a drive from hell, today has been great.
Last night was amazing. Switzerland has been amazing. Every show was better than the last and the first show was great. Most people havent a clue who GF are but they listen and clap and dance and cheer and whistle and get hit in the face with bass guitars and bumped and banged as we try and get our gear off the stage through the rammed club venues with possibly the smallest crew in music…both in terms of number and physical muscle. But they dont mind. The venues give us bottle after bottle of whatever we ask for and laugh when we try to pay them. The bar staff walk us back stage and help us make sandwiches when we say we’re hungry, an hour after theyve taken us to some restaurant where every single course costs more than we are used to spending between 4 of us. Solothurn’s dancefloor was almost melted by Fiasco making shapes to the cure and offspring. The Old town was woken up as we stumbled up stairs which would never, ever get past building control in the UK, and because there were 3 doors on our floor of the hotel and we only really needed one we decided to sleep in the foyer. It was easier and the floor seemed just fine. This morning we jumped border control into Germany by mistake and no one chased us. Things are on our side and it’s good. It’s good. Even this sh*tbox of a hotel in some grim industrial estate can’t f*ck up the mood. Enda has a bottle of booze so big he needs 2 hands to lift it, seriously. It’s our Tech Pmar’s 21st Birthday and at the very, very, very earliest it’ll be a month before we are home in Belfast. That’s the only downer. But hey, THINGS ARE GOOD.
Night. GF. xx
